McDonald’s Cites Russia’s “Lack of an Independent and Experienced Judiciary” Among Investment Risks

McDonald’s 2010 European results were in part driven by stronger operating performance in Russia, but even after more than three decades of doing business there challenges and uncertainties remain. Obstacles in Russia cited by the fast-food company in its recent 10-K include

A relatively higher risk of political instability, economic volatility, crime, corruption and social and ethnic unrest, all of which are exacerbated in many cases by a lack of an independent and experienced judiciary and uncertainties in how local law is applied and enforced, including in areas most relevant to commercial transactions and foreign investment.
